Heinz Sielmann Foundation – Gut Herbigshagen
The Gut Herbigshagen nature experience grounds of the Heinz Sielmann Foundation are situated on an expansive hilltop ridge south of Duderstadt. From here you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view over the Eichsfeld – and the chance to observe free-roaming wildlife up close.
Heinz Sielmann, the legendary nature documentary filmmaker, turned Gut Herbigshagen into a vibrant nature experience. On the expansive grounds, European bison, Przewalski's horses, Konik horses and various cattle breeds graze on large open pastures – in their natural state and visible from the visitor paths without any fences in between.
The viewpoint hill on the grounds offers one of the finest panoramas in the entire Eichsfeld: fields, forests, villages and the gentle hill chains of the region spread out all around – on clear days extending far into the Harz Mountains and the Thuringian Eichsfeld.
Well-maintained hiking trails lead across the grounds, past wildlife, traditional orchards and species-rich hay meadows. Information boards explain the conservation work of the foundation. A visitor centre with a small exhibition provides insight into the life and work of Heinz Sielmann.
The grounds are accessible year-round and are particularly suited to peaceful nature experiences – ideal after an active day in the surrounding area.
Unser Tipp
Come early in the morning or in the late afternoon – that is when the wildlife is most active. Bring binoculars and sturdy shoes for the field paths. The view from the hilltop at sunset is especially impressive.
