Wartburg Castle
Wartburg Castle near Eisenach is one of the most famous castles in Germany and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Here Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German in just ten weeks.
About 55 kilometres from our guesthouse, Wartburg Castle sits majestically on a cliff above Eisenach. The over 900-year-old castle is closely linked to German history – from the minnesingers around 1200 and Saint Elizabeth to Martin Luther's Bible translation in 1521/22.
Visitors can tour the magnificent historic rooms, including the famous Singers' Hall, the Elizabeth Gallery with golden mosaics, and Luther's study. The art collection includes works by Lucas Cranach the Elder and precious furniture spanning eight centuries.
The south tower offers a splendid panoramic view over the Thuringian Forest. The castle grounds and courtyards are freely accessible, while the museum and historic rooms can be toured.
Unser Tipp
Plan your visit on a weekday – it can get very crowded at weekends. The 30-minute walk from the car park through the forest is already an experience in itself.
